Trafsense®’s AID functionalities – Queue

Queue detection is becoming an important functionality due to the increasing use of adaptive traffic control via variable message signs, traffic information (DAB-radio, push notifications via app) and future cooperating intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS). Trafsense®'s > 99% reliability is proven by controlled queue tests.

Trafsense®’s capability of detailed real-time analysis of congestion levels at individual lane levels is shown below:

Trafsense® waterfall data (position vs time) from the dual lane westbound bore in the 1 115 m Lyderhorn tunnel on RV555 Bergen (Norway) on Thursday June 20, 2024 at 1500h. AADT is 20 000. Yellow areas signify queue.

Trafsense® offers very reliable real-time congestion measurements, even detecting pockets of free-flowing traffic dispersed inside the individual lanes. Note how the queue builds up from west (the exit) towards East (the entrance). This is caused by two pairs of exit and entrance ramps starting 200 m after the exit of this dual lane tunnel bore.
